Boxing — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by World Boxing · Boxing Federation of India (BFI) ·Last checked 16 Oct 2026

The whole Boxing journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Boxing guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · 9–18 · 12–18 Grassroots & local entry

SAI's KIRTI talent tests (9–18); up to 8th at Sub-Junior/Junior Nationals or top 3 in the state opens SAI Training Centre tests (12–18). Keep a Competition Record Book. [16][14][6]

  2. Stage 2 · U15 · U17 State to national breakthrough

BFI Sub-Junior U15 and U17 Nationals — U17 picks India's U17 squad. KIYG 2026 lists boxing; Junior Nationals, KIYG and SGFI medals count for jobs. [10][24][21]

  3. Stage 3 · Scouted · senior National camp & elite trials

TIDC scouts pick for NCOEs — Rohtak (boxing only), Bhopal, Aurangabad, Hamirpur, Guwahati, Itanagar. Elite Nationals and camp pick World Boxing and LA28 qualifier squads. [15][14][17]

  4. Stage 4 · Born 1988–2009 International orbit

LA28: one boxer per class per country; window 1 Apr 2027 – 31 May 2028 via the 2027 Worlds, continental and two world qualifiers. You must box at least one qualifier. [1]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [25][13]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

The papers, the sex test and the knockout lay-off

  • Every boxer needs a Competition Record Book with photo — bring the old one too if the new book has no bouts.
  • A yearly medical examination, signed and stamped by a registered doctor.
  • A pre-competition medical certificate (Fit to Box) not older than 3 months, confirming the boxer is not infectious for HIV 1 and 2, Hepatitis B or C.
  • Women boxers: a signed Declaration of Non-Pregnancy not older than 7 days before the entry check.
  • A signed doping-control consent. Missing or incomplete papers mean the Medical Jury can declare the boxer unfit to box — with no appeal. [6]
  • Since August 2025 every boxer over 18 entering a World Boxing owned or sanctioned event must take a once-in-a-lifetime PCR (SRY gene) test, or an equivalent genetic test, to confirm sex at birth; national federations carry out the testing. [7]

World Boxing suspension after head blows [6]

World Boxing suspension after head blows
What happenedNo boxing or sparring for
KO or referee stops the bout for heavy head blows (no loss of consciousness)At least 30 days
KO with loss of consciousnessAt least 90 days
Two KO/RSC losses to head blows within 3 months90 days after the second
Three within 12 monthsOne year after the third

Before returning, a doctor or neurologist must declare the boxer fit; World Boxing highly recommends a CT or MRI scan. Recent surgery (90 days) or a seizure in the last 3 months bars a boxer at the pre-bout check. [6]

  • Under the anti-doping code the boxer must be available for testing in and out of competition and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; if no permitted treatment exists, apply to NADA for a TUE. [12]

04 Every age group, child to masters

Boxing at every age — from the U15 ring to the elite cut-off at 40

Boxing is one of the few sports with a hard top age: World Boxing's 2026 elite events take boxers aged 19 to 40, and LA28 takes those born 1988 to 2009. There is no official masters boxing — after 40 the road is coaching. [2][1]

  1. 9–18years
    Child

    KIRTI talent test

SAI's KIRTI programme tests children aged 9 to 18 at 174 Talent Assessment Centres to feed the SAI and Khelo India pipeline. [16]

  2. 12–18years
    Youth

    SAI Training Centre (STC)

Boxing is one of the 27 sports at SAI's Training Centres. Entry at 12 to 18: up to 8th at Sub-Junior (incl. cadet) or Junior Nationals, top 3 at a state championship, or top 3 at a district or school-board championship to sit the trials — then a battery of tests. [14]

  3. Under 15years
    Youth

    Sub-Junior U15 Nationals

India's youngest national ring. Medals here and at Junior Nationals count for sports-quota jobs. [9][21]

  4. Under 17years
    Youth

    Sub-Junior U17 Nationals

13 weight classes and about 600 boxers (Nagpur, April 2026) — the selection platform for India's U17 squad. Railways treat the U17 championship as the boxing Junior National. [10][22]

  5. 18–28years
    Job window

    Sports-quota job window

Railways sports quota takes ages 18–25 (on 1 Jan 2027, Western Railway 2026-27 notice). CRPF takes 18–23 (on 1 Aug 2026) plus 5 years for a sportsperson — up to 28 unreserved, 31 OBC, 33 SC/ST. Central Group C posts relax the upper age by up to 5 years (10 for SC/ST). [22][23][20]

  6. 19–40years
    Senior · open

Elite — World Boxing and LA28

    World Boxing's 2026 elite events take boxers born 1986 to 2007. LA28 takes boxers born 1 Jan 1988 – 31 Dec 2009, checked against the passport. [2][1]

No official masters category exists in World Boxing's files, so Education Margdarshan does not show one. Former boxers move to coaching, refereeing and sports-quota service. [2]

Boxing is one of SAI's 13 priority disciplines. NCOEs give boarding, coaches, sports science and individual diets set by nutritionists. [14]

Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), Vijayanagar, Karnataka lists boxing among its sports and runs the Kotak Karma Boxing Programme — training, equipment, nutrition and support for talented boxers — on a campus with athlete residences, recovery, physiotherapy and biomechanics. [18][19]

06 Equipment costs & who pays

Gloves, headguards and who pays the bills

  • At World Boxing events the organisers supply the gloves, headguards, tape and gauze/Velcro bandages; boxers bring the rest of their kit.
  • A boxer's own training gloves, headgear, mouthguard and shoes are the family's or academy's cost until a scheme picks the boxer up. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [5]
