Bodybuilding — Step-by-Step Roadmap
The whole Bodybuilding journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Bodybuilding guide.
Zero to podium — the four stages
Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [12][6]
Body rules and anti-doping
- Implants or fluid injections that change the natural shape of any muscle or body part are strictly prohibited and can get you disqualified.
- Junior classes start at 15; masters at 40. [1]
- In India you must be available for testing, check every medicine against the Prohibited List, and apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [5]
- Supplements, fat-burners and 'cutting' products are the biggest doping risk in this sport: no supplement is 100% safe and strict liability applies — you are responsible for anything found in your sample. Food first, with a certified nutritionist. [6]
From the gym to a sports-quota job
The bodybuilding ladder [1][10][11]
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Gym | Build the physique; learn the seven poses and the 30–60 second posedown |
| 2. District, state & national contests | Compete in your weight (and age) class; junior classes from 15 |
| 3. University contests | All India Inter-University certificates are accepted by Railways |
| 4. International contests | IFBB world and continental championships |
| 5. Job trial | CRPF or Railways sports-quota trial in your weight class |
Railways will not count results from events run by the Indian Body Builders Federation (IBBF) or its units after 31 December 2021. Certificates from the Association of Indian Universities and the international federation are accepted. Ask which body runs a contest before you count on its certificate. [10]
Bodybuilding at every age — juniors at 15 to masters 65+
IFBB juniors start at 15; masters begin at 40 and run to 65 and over, with their own Masters World Championships. [1]
Type an age to light up every group you can enter.
- 15–20years
- 21–23years
- Adultyears
-
40–59years
Masters · veterans
Masters 40–44 … 55–59
Weight classes shrink with age: four for 40–49, two for 50–54 and 55–59. [1]
- 60+years
Bodybuilding is not on the LA28 or 2026 Asian Games programme and not on the Sports Ministry's cash-award list. [2][3][4]
Where bodybuilders train
- Bodybuilding is not among the sports at SAI's National Centres of Excellence or Training Centres. Athletes train in private or institutional gyms. [7]
Trunks, tan, oil — and who pays
What the IFBB rules allow on stage [1]
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Posing trunks | One colour, opaque, clean; cover at least ¾ of the glutes and the whole front; sides at least 5 cm; no padding |
| Tan | Self-tan and professional spray or airbrush tans are allowed. A tan that wipes off means you cannot go on stage |
| Glitter & shine | Sparkles, glitter, metallic pearls or gold colour are banned |
| Oil | Body oil and moisturiser in moderation; excessive oil is strictly banned |
| Jewellery & props | Nothing but a wedding ring; no shoes, glasses, watches, wigs or props |
| Head cover | Only a small, tight cap with no visor, for national or religious rules, approved at registration |
- The real costs are the gym, food and travel to contests. Education Margdarshan does not print prices — no governing body publishes them. The Chief Judge decides whether your attire is acceptable and can disqualify you if it is not. [1]
Who pays [8][11]
| Stage | Paid by | What you get |

| Athlete in hardship | PDU National Welfare Fund | Up to ₹2.50 lakh |
| Job trial (CRPF) | The candidate | CRPF fee ₹100 for UR/OBC/EWS men; free for SC, ST and ex-servicemen |
