Baseball & Softball — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) · national federations in India ·Last checked 17 Oct 2026

The whole Baseball & Softball journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Baseball & Softball guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · Under 12 Grassroots & local entry

Learn to throw, catch, hit and run the bases with a school, club or state association; WBSC age groups start at U-12. [7][1]

  2. Stage 2 · 10–18 · U-15/U-18 State to national breakthrough

Softball is one of SAI's 27 STC sports (baseball is not); WBSC U-15 and U-18 World Cups. [7][1]

  3. Stage 3 · U-23 · senior U-23 & national team

U-23 World Cup, then the Asian Championship and Asian Games — Asia's door to the LA28 qualifiers. [1][4][3]

  4. Stage 4 · LA28 International orbit

6 teams each. Baseball: Asia's top 2 at the Asia Championship can enter the Final Qualifier. Softball: win the Asia/Oceania qualifier or the Final Qualifier. [3]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [12][13]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

Age rule and anti-doping

  • LA28 baseball players must turn 18 in 2028; softball players must turn 16 in 2028. [3]
  • Doping control takes place at WBSC competitions. Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [2][6]

05 Training centres & cities

Where players train

  • Softball is one of the 27 disciplines at SAI Training Centres (STCs), which take young athletes. Baseball is not on the STC list, so players usually start with a school, club or state association. [7]
06 Equipment costs & who pays

Gloves, bats, helmets — and who pays

  • You need a glove, a bat that meets WBSC rules, and a helmet; catchers need full protective gear. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [1][2]
