Weightlifting — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) · Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) ·Last checked 16 Oct 2026

The whole Weightlifting journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Weightlifting guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · 12–18 Grassroots & local entry

Lift in your state association's trials; up to 8th at Sub-Junior/Junior Nationals or top 3 in the state opens SAI Training Centre tests. KIYG 2026 lists weightlifting. [4][14][22]

  2. Stage 2 · Youth · junior · senior State to national breakthrough

IWLF Nationals need a qualifying Total, an athlete ID, a Khelo India KID number, an ADEL anti-doping certificate and filed whereabouts; medals are for the Total only. [4]

  3. Stage 3 · Senior National camp & elite trials

NCOEs at Patiala, Bengaluru, Aurangabad, Lucknow, Imphal, Itanagar. A panel of 32 probables, Open Selection Trials, then the top 16 stay in the national camp. [14][2]

  4. Stage 4 · Born ≤2013 International orbit

LA28 ranking window 27 Jul 2026 – 7 May 2028: best 3 Totals in Period 1 + best 2 in Period 2 in one Olympic category; top 8 per category qualify, max 3 per gender per country. [2]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [23][13]

02 Physical benchmarks & NADA clearance

Whereabouts, ADEL and age tests — the papers that decide selection

IWLF has a zero-tolerance doping policy. No lifter is considered for selection unless fully compliant with WADA, ITA, NADA and IWF rules, holding a valid ADEL anti-doping education certificate, available for testing and meeting all whereabouts duties, and free of any doping ban. [2]

  • For international entries you must have been ADAMS whereabouts-compliant for at least two quarters before the championship, with a valid passport.
  • Every domestic event (Nationals, Khelo India, National Games, women's league) needs a signed dope declaration form at body-weight time and an ADEL form (valid 2 years).
  • Whereabouts must be filed within 30 days of the event notice; three whereabouts failures can lead to suspension. [2][5]
  • LA28 rule: lifters must stay continuously available for testing through the whole qualification period. If a country's lifters commit three or more doping violations between 26 July 2024 and 13 July 2028, it can lose some or all of its Olympic places. [2]
  • SAI's Age Verification Test for boys up to 17 and girls up to 15: doctor's examination, dental examination and a TW3 X-ray; appeals go to the Medical Appellate Board at AIIMS New Delhi. [10]
  • Check every medicine against the Prohibited List; if no permitted treatment exists, apply to NADA for a TUE. [12]

Education Margdarshan could not find an official Government file listing the Army Sports Institute's current disciplines or entry route, so it is not listed here. Ask the Army recruiting office directly.

06 Equipment costs & who pays

Costume, shoes, belt — and who pays

  • Your own kit: a one-piece collarless costume, sport (lifting) shoes, an optional belt up to 12 cm, and bandages or tape as the rules allow. [3]

Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. Nationals fees (₹1,500 + ₹500 anti-doping fee per lifter) are charged on the State's entry, and the organisers at Modinagar gave no boarding or lodging. [4]
