Table Tennis — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) · Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) ·Last checked 16 Oct 2026

The whole Table Tennis journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Table Tennis guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · 8–14 · U11 Grassroots & local entry

NSTC schools (8–14) and your state association; U11 and U13 national ranking events start your TTFI ranking. Check each event is on — TTFI's recognition was suspended in Aug 2026. [13][4][5]

  2. Stage 2 · U15–U19 State to national breakthrough

Cadet, junior and youth ranking events and nationals; SAI Training Centres take 12–18. KIYG 2026 lists table tennis. [3][13][22]

  3. Stage 3 · Senior National camp & elite trials

Senior selection weighs national results 50%, international results 40% and the Selection Committee 10%. NCOE: Kolkata (Gandhinagar for para). [2][13]

  4. Stage 4 · World ranking International orbit

World top 25 = 40 points; nothing beyond 200. A singles player ranked 30 or better in the world is selected directly; so is a doubles pair both ranked 8 or better. [2]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [23][12]

  • SAI's Age Verification Test applies to boys up to 17 and girls up to 15: a doctor's physical examination, a dentist's examination and a TW3 X-ray. Appeals go to the Medical Appellate Board at AIIMS New Delhi. [9]
  • SAI centres admit trainees only after anthropometric, physiological and psychological tests and a battery of tests — no direct admission. [13]
  • You must be available for testing in and out of competition and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; if no permitted treatment exists, apply to NADA for a TUE. [11]

The order also cited the delay in holding the 2025 National Championships. Check with your State association that each 2026 event is still on before you travel. [5]

  • You cannot apply to become a Khelo India athlete — scouts pick from recognised competitions; register on the National Sports Repository System. [14]
04 Every age group, child to masters

Table tennis at every age — U11 ranking events to World Masters at 90

TTFI ranks youth players from U11 to U19; seniors have no upper limit; and ITTF's World Master Championships are open to everyone 40 and over. [4][1]

  1. 8–14years
    Child

    SAI-adopted school (NSTC)

SAI adopts schools with good facilities in Table Tennis — one of the nine school sports of its National Sports Talent Contest — so a child of 8 to 14 can study and train there with an NSNIS-trained coach. Entry on district or state results, a battery of tests, age check and medical. [13]

  2. U11 · U13years
    Child

    Sub-junior ranking events

TTFI's youngest national ranking groups; Sub-Junior and Cadet Nationals. [4][2][3]

  3. 12–18years
    Youth

    SAI Training Centre (STC)

Table Tennis is one of the 27 sports at SAI's Training Centres. Entry at 12 to 18: up to 8th at Sub-Junior (incl. cadet) or Junior Nationals, top 3 at a state championship, or top 3 at a district or school-board championship to sit the trials — then a battery of tests. [13]

  4. U15–U19years
    Youth

    Cadet, junior and youth

Up to 80% of a youth player's selection score comes from national performance, so play the ranking events. [4][2]

    Sports-quota job window

Blades, rubbers and who pays the bills

  • A player's own kit is the racket: a blade that is at least 85% natural wood, two ITTF-authorised rubbers (one black), and solvent-free glue. Rubbers wear out and must be replaced — any physical or chemical treatment of the rubber is illegal.
  • Tables, nets and balls at events must be brands currently approved by the ITTF. [1]

Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them.
