Swimming — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by World Aquatics · Swimming Federation of India (SFI) ·Last checked 16 Oct 2026

The whole Swimming journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Swimming guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · 8–14 · 9–12 Grassroots & local entry

NSTC schools (8–14) and SFI's Development Pool (9–12, regional camps). Enter meets through your state unit on SFI's GMS portal. [10][7][4]

  2. Stage 2 · 11–18 State to national breakthrough

Sub-Junior Nationals (Groups III, II: 11–14) and Junior Nationals (Groups I-B, I-A: 15–18); SAI Training Centres take 12–18. KIYG 2026 lists swimming. [3][6][5][10][21]

  3. Stage 3 · 13+ National camp & elite trials

Meet SFI's electronically timed standards to join the National Talent Pool — funded exposure meets and camps; SFI recommends NTPA swimmers for TOPS. NCOE: Dr SPM pool, Delhi. [7][10]

  4. Stage 4 · Senior International orbit

SFI's own qualification systems decide the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Aquatics teams, with selection policies for the World and World Junior Championships. [8]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [22][13]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

Legal swimsuits, minimum ages and doping control

  • Swimsuits must be on World Aquatics' List of Approved Swimwear at the time of the competition — a suit off the list is illegal at Olympic and World Aquatics events.
  • Men: suit no higher than the navel and no lower than the knee, in one piece. Women: may not cover the neck or go past the shoulders or below the knee; one or two pieces.
  • Material must be textile fabric, at most two layers, with no shapes or structures on the surface; nothing else may be worn on the body besides suit, cap and goggles. [1]
  • Olympic Games, World Championships and the 25 m World Championships: a swimmer must be at least 14 on 31 December of the competition year, or younger with at least the 'B' entry time.
  • World Junior Championships: aged 14 to 18 on 31 December of the competition year. [1]
  • NADA tests at the Senior Nationals; a swimmer called for testing must stay with the NADA escort, even between events.
  • Every swimmer entered needs a valid SFI UID for 2026-27. [4]
  • Check every medicine against the Prohibited List and apply to NADA for a TUE if no permitted treatment exists. [12]

04 Every age group, child to masters

Swimming at every age — sub-junior at 11 to masters at 100+

SFI's age groups run from 11; the Olympics set only a lower age; and World Aquatics masters swimming starts at 25 in five-year groups 'as high in age as necessary'. [3][1]

  1. 8–14years
    Child

    SAI-adopted school (NSTC)

SAI adopts schools with good facilities in Swimming — one of the nine school sports of its National Sports Talent Contest — so a child of 8 to 14 can study and train there with an NSNIS-trained coach. Entry on district or state results, a battery of tests, age check and medical. [10]

  2. 9–12years
    Child

    SFI talent group

SFI's development pool takes ages 9–12 or scouted talent. [7]

  3. 11–14years
    Child

Sub-Junior Nationals (Groups III and II)

    Group III 11–12 (born 2014–15) and Group II 13–14 (born 2012–13) at the 42nd Sub-Junior Nationals. [3][6]

  4. 12–18years
    Youth

    SAI Training Centre (STC)

Swimming is one of the 27 sports at SAI's Training Centres. Entry at 12 to 18: up to 8th at Sub-Junior (incl. cadet) or Junior Nationals, top 3 at a state championship, or top 3 at a district or school-board championship to sit the trials — then a battery of tests. [10]

  5. 13+years
    Youth

    National Talent Pool

Age 13+ with SFI's age-specific time standards (electronic timing) — opens funded exposure meets, camps and a TOPS recommendation. [7]

  6. 14+years
    Senior · open

Senior — Olympics and World Championships

Only a lower limit: 14 on 31 December (younger with a 'B' time). The Senior Nationals have no age group. [1][4]

  7. 15–18years
    Junior

Junior Nationals (Groups I-B and I-A)

    Group I(B) 15–16 and I(A) 17–18 at the 52nd Junior Nationals. World Juniors take ages 14 to 18 on 31 December. [3][5][1]

  8. 17+years
    Coach · official

    Coach — SAI NSNIS courses

After Class 12: the Six-Week Certificate Course in Sports Coaching (₹14,800; 4 weeks online, 2 at a SAI centre) needs a top-3 district school result, or state, inter-university, SGFI or national participation. The 1-year Diploma in Sports Coaching (₹63,800) runs in Swimming: Class 12 + an international record, or a degree + Senior Nationals, Khelo India University or inter-university play, or Junior Nationals twice. [19][20]

  9. 18–28years
    Job window

    Sports-quota job window

Railways sports quota takes ages 18–25 (on 1 Jan 2027, Western Railway 2026-27 notice). CRPF takes 18–23 (on 1 Aug 2026) plus 5 years for a sportsperson — up to 28 unreserved, 31 OBC, 33 SC/ST. Central Group C posts relax the upper age by up to 5 years (10 for SC/ST). [17][18][15]

  10. 25–100+years
    Masters · veterans

    Masters swimming

From 25: five-year groups 25–29, 30–34 … continuing 'as high in age as necessary'. Relays go by the four swimmers' total age (100–119, then 40-year steps). Open water masters too, 1.5–5 km. [1]

We could not find a 'SAI Glenmark Aquatic Academy' in SAI's list of National Centres of Excellence, so Education Margdarshan does not list it. Ask any academy for its SAI or SFI recognition letter before paying fees. [10]

06 Equipment costs & who pays

Tech suits, entry fees and who pays

  • A racing 'tech suit' is legal only if its model is on the approved list; check the label before buying. Education Margdarshan does not print suit prices — World Aquatics and SFI do not publish them. [1]
  • Senior Nationals entry: ₹40 per event per swimmer and ₹200 per relay team, paid by the state unit.
  • A swimmer entered on a qualifying time who fails to swim the single-entry time in at least one event pays a ₹1,000 penalty and gets no participation certificate. [4]

07 Earning channels & central job quotas

Awards, admissions and sports-quota jobs

SFI's own development plan says it plainly: in India a medal at the Nationals, the Khelo India Games or the National Games is the road to a college admission or a government job. [7]

  • Swimming is one of the 65 sports in the central sports quota for Group C posts, with up to 5 years' age relaxation (10 for SC/ST).
  • Medals at the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games or World Championships can bring up to three out-of-turn promotions. [15]

Since 4 March 2024, medals at Junior Nationals, the Khelo India Youth Games (above 18) and SGFI school games also count. [16]

Retired champions can receive the Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons of ₹12,000–20,000 a month. [14]
