Nuclear Medicine Technologist — Step-by-Step Roadmap
Your journey, phase by phase
-
Phase 1 · School years Class 12 PCB Physics is as important as Biology here.
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology is the standard requirement.
- Most universities ask for Biology — PCM students should check each university's rules.
- Minimum marks and age are set by each university.
-
Phase 2 · After Class 12 Admission Merit or the university's own entrance; no single national exam.
- Admission is by merit or the university's own entrance test.
- Choose a programme attached to an AERB-licensed facility, so your clinical training counts.
- Course length and internship differ by university.
-
Phase 3 · Undergraduate B.Sc NMT, or B.Sc + PG diploma Two routes into the profession.
- Route 1: B.Sc Nuclear Medicine Technology.
- Route 2: a science graduate takes a postgraduate NMT diploma.
- Nuclear medicine gives a small radioactive tracer and images how organs work; radiology uses external X-rays, CT and MRI.
-
Phase 4 · End of the course Internship In a hospital nuclear medicine department.
- The internship is done in a hospital nuclear medicine department.
- Exposure is controlled by AERB rules, monitoring badges and safety procedures — following them strictly is part of the job.
- AERB licenses nuclear medicine facilities and enforces radiation-safety rules, including qualified staff.
-
Phase 5 · After the course Technologist job and growth PET-CT centres, cancer hospitals and research institutes.
- Employers: cancer hospitals, multi-speciality hospitals, PET-CT diagnostic centres and research institutes; PET-CT experience is valued.
- Growth path: technologist → senior technologist → chief technologist / radiation-safety roles.
- The NCAHP Act, 2021 regulates allied and healthcare professions; further study: M.Sc in nuclear medicine technology or medical physics.
