Judo — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by International Judo Federation (IJF) · Judo Federation of India (JFI) ·Last checked 17 Oct 2026

The whole Judo journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Judo guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · Under 12+ Grassroots & local entry

Join a club of your state judo association and register with JFI (₹1,000 for 2 years). Sub-Junior Nationals (12–14): 3-minute bouts, no arm-locks or chokes. [5]

  2. Stage 2 · 15–17 · 12–18 State to national breakthrough

Cadet Nationals pick India's Asian and World Cadet teams; up to 8th at Sub-Junior/Junior Nationals opens SAI Training Centre tests. KIYG 2026 lists judo. [6][14][25]

  3. Stage 3 · U21 · senior National camp & elite trials

Gold and silver at Junior/Senior Nationals (or top two at trials) are first in line for India. NCOEs: Bhopal, Hamirpur, Imphal, Patiala; IIS runs a girls' judo programme. [7][14][15]

  4. Stage 4 · Born ≤2013 International orbit

Grand Prix, Grand Slam and Continental Open points build your IJF ranking (window 15 Jun 2026 – 12 Jun 2028): top 17 per class qualify, then continental places. All entries go through JFI. [1][7]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [26][13]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

The two weigh-ins, age proof and medical papers

  • Official weigh-in: the day before you fight, at 16:00 local time at IJF events. Seniors and juniors must be inside the limit — there is no tolerance.
  • Cadets weigh in wearing underwear, so they get 0.2 kg extra (for 44 kg, the limit is 44.2 kg).
  • Random weigh-in: on fight day, four judoka per class are drawn and weighed. You may be at most 5% over your category limit; fail and you cannot fight. [3]
  • At JFI's Sub-Junior Nationals: no tolerance at all, one try on the scale, and a judoka over or under the limit is disqualified with no certificate.
  • Bring three original age proofs: a birth certificate issued at least 3 years before, a school certificate with photo and affiliation number, and Aadhaar or JFI ID. JFI can order a medical age test; if 4 or more players of a state are found over-age, the whole team is disqualified.
  • Bring two judogis — one blue, one white; a judogi that fails the measurement check means you lose that bout. [5]
  • Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List. JFI also asks for whereabouts to be filed with JFI and NADA before it enters you abroad. [12][7]

6. World rankingSeniorGrand Prix, Grand Slam and Continental Open points build your IJF ranking — the only road to LA28
  • To fight a Grand Prix, Grand Slam or Continental Open at your own cost, JFI wants a world ranking within the top 100 (senior) or 50 (junior), or a first or second place at the latest nationals or trials; apply two months before the entry deadline and pay a ₹15,000 non-refundable processing fee.
  • No club, academy or state can enter you abroad on its own — all entries go through JFI. [7]

Medals at the Khelo India Youth Games (judo is one of its 27 sports), Junior Nationals and SGFI school games now count for central sports-quota jobs. [20][17]

04 Every age group, child to masters

Judo at every age — from a club at 10 to World Veterans at 70+

IJF counts age in the calendar year. No one under 15 may fight an IJF event; seniors have no upper limit; and from 30 the World Veterans run in five-year divisions up to 70 and over. [3]

  1. Under 15years
    Child

    Club and Sub-Junior Nationals

Join a club of your state association and register with JFI (₹1,000 for two years). Sub-Junior Nationals take judoka born 2012–2014: 3-minute bouts, no arm-locks or chokes, no weight tolerance. [5]

  2. 12–18years
    Youth

    SAI Training Centre (STC)

Judo is one of the 27 sports at SAI's Training Centres. Entry at 12 to 18: up to 8th at Sub-Junior (incl. cadet) or Junior Nationals, top 3 at a state championship, or top 3 at a district or school-board championship to sit the trials — then a battery of tests. [14]

  3. 15–17years
    Youth

    Cadet (U18)

Eight weight classes each for boys and girls, 0.2 kg allowance at weigh-in. India's Cadet Nationals pick the teams for the Asian and World Cadet Championships. [3][6]

  4. 15–20years
    Junior

    Junior (U21)

Same seven classes as seniors and no tolerance at the day-before weigh-in. JFI wants a world rank in the top 50 (junior) before it sends you abroad at your own cost. [3][7]

  5. 15+years
    Senior · open

Senior — LA28 by world ranking

Senior judo has no upper age limit. LA28 places come from the IJF World Ranking List (15 June 2026 – 12 June 2028); you must be born on or before 31 Dec 2013. [3][1]

  6. 17+years
    Coach · official

    Coach — SAI NSNIS courses

After Class 12: the Six-Week Certificate Course in Sports Coaching (₹14,800; 4 weeks online, 2 at a SAI centre) needs a top-3 district school result, or state, inter-university, SGFI or national participation. The 1-year Diploma in Sports Coaching (₹63,800) runs in Judo: Class 12 + an international record, or a degree + Senior Nationals, Khelo India University or inter-university play, or Junior Nationals twice. [23][24]

  7. 18–28years
    Job window

    Sports-quota job window

Railways sports quota takes ages 18–25 (on 1 Jan 2027, Western Railway 2026-27 notice). CRPF takes 18–23 (on 1 Aug 2026) plus 5 years for a sportsperson — up to 28 unreserved, 31 OBC, 33 SC/ST. Central Group C posts relax the upper age by up to 5 years (10 for SC/ST). [21][22][19]

  8. 30–59years
    Masters · veterans

    Veterans M1/F1 to M6/F6

World Veterans start at 30 in the year, in five-year divisions (M1/F1 30–34 … M6/F6 55–59), senior weight classes and 3-minute contests. A medical certificate under a year old is required. [3]

  9. 60+years
    Masters · veterans

    Veterans M7/F7 to M9/F9

06 Equipment costs & who pays

Judogis, travel and who pays the bills

  • Your kit is simple: one blue and one white judogi that pass the IJF size check, and a belt. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them.
  • At national championships, boarding, lodging, travel and insurance are paid by the judoka, the state association or the department — not by JFI.
  • Fees at the 2026-27 Sub-Junior Nationals: ₹200 per player, ₹2,500 per state team; JFI registration ₹1,000 for two years. [5][6]
