Hockey — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by International Hockey Federation (FIH) · Hockey India ·Last checked 15 Oct 2026

The whole Hockey journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Hockey guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · 8–14 · 10–18 Grassroots & local entry

Hockey is an NSTC school sport (8–14). A team in the top 4 at Sub Junior/Junior Nationals or top 2 in the state can sit SAI Training Centre tests (10–18). [10]

  2. Stage 2 · Sub Jr · Jr State to national breakthrough

Hockey India Nationals in divisions A/B/C with promotion and relegation; KIYG 2026 lists hockey. Scouted juniors go to development NCOEs such as Lucknow and Bhopal. [4][21][10]

  3. Stage 3 · Senior National camp & elite trials

Selectors name core probables from Nationals and sanctioned events; the national camp runs mainly at SAI Bengaluru; final trials 60–45 days before an overseas event. [5]

  4. Stage 4 · LA28 International orbit

India's men and women both won Asian Games 2026 gold — a direct LA28 place. Pro League matches run alongside the camp; HIL squads carry 3+ Indian juniors. [8][9][5][6]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [22][14]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

Equipment limits, selection criteria and anti-doping

Stick and ball limits (FIH) [1]

Stick and ball limits (FIH)

Stick lengthNot more than 105 cm

Bow of the stickUp to 25 mm deep
Ball156–163 g
  • The selection committee judges campers on position balance, physical ability, the ability to carry out the team's tactical plan, contribution to team dynamics and experience.
  • The Chief Coach reports each camper's progress and can recommend dropping under-performers or adding new probables.
  • Final trials are held 60–45 days before the team leaves for an overseas event (45–30 days for events in India); SAI is told at least a week ahead and gets the minutes within 48 hours. [5]
  • Team-game entry to SAI Training Centres is for ages 10–18, after a battery of motor-quality and skill tests; a player who misses the motor-quality level can be taken provisionally for six months. [10]
  • Anti-doping: be available for testing, check every medicine against the Prohibited List and apply for a TUE when no permitted treatment exists. [13]

Unlike the BCCI, Hockey India publishes no graded central-contract list; national campers are trained through SAI camps, and earnings come from the HIL, awards and jobs.

  • Hockey is one of the 65 sports in the central sports quota for Group C posts, with up to 5 years' age relaxation (10 for SC/ST).
  • Medals at the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games or World Championships can bring up to three out-of-turn promotions; in team events only if the player played at least 50% of the matches. [15]

Coaching route after playing: Hockey India runs its own HI Level 1 and Level 2 certification and lists FIH Academy Level 1–4 certified coaches. [2]
