Gymnastics — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) · Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) ·Last checked 17 Oct 2026

The whole Gymnastics journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Gymnastics guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · 8–14 Grassroots & local entry

Start early at a club, school or state centre; gymnastics is an NSTC school sport (8–14). [14]

  2. Stage 2 · 12–18 · U18 State to national breakthrough

Up to 8th at Sub-Junior/Junior Nationals or top 3 in the state opens SAI Training Centre tests. KIYG 2026 lists gymnastics; its medals count for central jobs. [14][22][17]

  3. Stage 3 · WAG 14–15 · MAG 15–18 National camp & elite trials

Junior nationals and FIG junior events; scouted gymnasts train at NCOEs Aurangabad, Kolkata or IG Stadium Delhi. [1][14]

  4. Stage 4 · Women 16+ · men 18+ International orbit

LA28 places come from the 2026 and 2027 World Championships, then the 2028 Apparatus World Cup series. Keep a valid FIG licence to the end of the Games. [5]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [23][24]

Gymnastics at every age — early start, senior at 15 to 18

FIG keeps children out of senior events until a set age that differs by discipline — 16 for women's artistic, 18 for men's. [1]

  1. 8–14years
    Child

    SAI-adopted school (NSTC)

SAI adopts schools with good facilities in Gymnastics — one of the nine school sports of its National Sports Talent Contest — so a child of 8 to 14 can study and train there with an NSNIS-trained coach. Entry on district or state results, a battery of tests, age check and medical. [14]

  2. 12–18years
    Youth

    SAI Training Centre (STC)

Gymnastics is one of the 27 sports at SAI's Training Centres. Entry at 12 to 18: up to 8th at Sub-Junior (incl. cadet) or Junior Nationals, top 3 at a state championship, or top 3 at a district or school-board championship to sit the trials — then a battery of tests. [14]

  3. 12–15years
    Youth

    WAG youth and junior

    Women's artistic youth 12–14 and junior 14–15; rhythmic junior 14–15. [1]

    Other junior groups

Men's artistic junior 15–18, trampoline 13–16, acrobatic 13–19, aerobic 15–17, parkour 14–16. After one senior World Cup or championship you cannot go back to junior. [1]

    Coach — SAI NSNIS courses

After Class 12: the Six-Week Certificate Course in Sports Coaching (₹14,800; 4 weeks online, 2 at a SAI centre) needs a top-3 district school result, or state, inter-university, SGFI or national participation. The 1-year Diploma in Sports Coaching (₹63,800) runs in Gymnastics: Class 12 + an international record, or a degree + Senior Nationals, Khelo India University or inter-university play, or Junior Nationals twice. [20][21]

  7. 18–28years
    Job window

    Sports-quota job window

Railways sports quota takes ages 18–25 (on 1 Jan 2027, Western Railway 2026-27 notice). CRPF takes 18–23 (on 1 Aug 2026) plus 5 years for a sportsperson — up to 28 unreserved, 31 OBC, 33 SC/ST. Central Group C posts relax the upper age by up to 5 years (10 for SC/ST). [18][19][16]

06 Equipment costs & who pays

Halls, apparatus and who pays the bills

  • Training needs a hall with apparatus and mats; SAI centres provide these to the gymnasts they select. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices for attire or grips — no governing body publishes them.
  • A FIG licence is needed for every FIG-sanctioned event and must stay valid to the end of the competition. [14][1]
