Football — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by IFAB / FIFA · All India Football Federation (AIFF) ·Last checked 15 Oct 2026

The whole Football journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Football guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · 4–12 · 8–14 Grassroots & local entry

AIFF Blue Cubs League small-sided games (find one in the app); SAI-adopted NSTC schools take 8–14. Every academy must report its minors to the state association. [5][12][2]

  2. Stage 2 · U14–U19 · 10–18 State to national breakthrough

School, district and state leagues — where SAI and Khelo India scouts look. A team in the top 4 at Sub-Junior/Junior Nationals opens SAI Training Centres. KIYG 2026 lists football. [5][12][21]

  3. Stage 3 · U18 · 16+ National camp & elite trials

AIFF U-18 Elite League (130+ clubs and academies). First pro contract from 16 — under 18 it needs a parent's signature, max 3 years. NCOEs: Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati, Imphal. [6][2][12]

  4. Stage 4 · Youth · senior International orbit

AIFF national teams — men U17, U19, U23, senior; women U15, U17, U19, senior. A minor can move abroad only under FIFA Article 19. [7][2]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [22][16]

02 Physical, age & gender eligibility

Contracts, minors and what academies test at trials

  • A minor is any player under 18. A professional has a written contract and is paid more than his or her football expenses; an amateur signs an AIFF consent form and is not paid beyond expenses.
  • Players under 16 may not sign a contract under any circumstance.
  • Under 18, a professional contract needs the parents' or guardian's counter-signature and may run for no more than 3 years.
  • Any contract runs at least to the end of the season and at most 5 years.
  • International transfers of minors are allowed only under Article 19 of FIFA's transfer regulations.
  • Every club academy and private academy must report all minors it trains to the state association, which keeps a register. [2]

Team-game entry to SAI Training Centres is for ages 10 to 18; a player who misses the motor-quality tests may be taken provisionally for six months. [12]

04 Every age group, child to masters

Football at every age — Blue Cubs at 4 to a pro contract at 16

Football has no weight or height classes; competitions are split by age. AIFF's ladder starts with Blue Cubs leagues at 4, a first professional contract is allowed from 16, and senior football has no upper age. [1][5][2]

FIFA Talent Academy, Bhubaneswar (Odisha) is part of the FIFA Talent Development Scheme run with the AIFF. [8]

The AIFF's National Centre of Excellence — India Football Campus, Kolkata is planned as the home of all national teams; its first phase (technical centre, one natural and one floodlit artificial pitch) is under construction with FIFA and AFC help. [9]

SAI Bengaluru is not a football centre — its NCOE disciplines are athletics, hockey, taekwondo and weightlifting. AIFF also publishes a list of accredited academies on its website. [12]

06 Dietary framework & financial cost breakdown

Food, supplements and who pays

  • Food first: NADA's advice is to meet needs from food before considering supplements, with a certified nutritionist.
  • No supplement is 100% safe and strict liability applies — the player is responsible for whatever is found in the sample. [16]

07 Earning channels & post-athletic horizons

Contracts, coaching licences and sports-quota jobs

  • A professional contract is your main income; a club wanting a player under contract must inform his current club in writing first, and he is free to sign elsewhere only when his contract has expired or ends within 6 months.
  • If a licensed football agent negotiated the deal, the contract must name the agent. [2]
