Cycling — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) · Cycling Federation of India (CFI) ·Last checked 17 Oct 2026

The whole Cycling journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Cycling guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · 16 or under Grassroots & local entry

Club and district races to learn bike handling; your national federation runs youth categories. Choose track, road, MTB or BMX by your strengths. [3][1]

  2. Stage 2 · 12–18 · U18 State to national breakthrough

Up to 8th at Sub-Junior/Junior Nationals or top 3 in the state opens SAI Training Centre tests. KIYG 2026 lists cycling. [11][18]

  3. Stage 3 · Junior 17–18 + National camp & elite trials

National championships (Railways treat the National Cycling Championship as the junior national). NCOEs: IG Stadium velodrome Delhi, Patiala, Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati, Imphal. [14][11]

  4. Stage 4 · U23 · elite International orbit

UCI points races abroad build the ranking that decides Asian Games and LA28 places — mainly by nation and by rider over the qualification period. [1]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [19][10]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

Age rules, licences and anti-doping

  • Juniors (17–18) race their own international events; at 19 you move to Under 23 or Elite. In BMX racing and freestyle, trials, indoor and para-cycling, riders of 16 or younger may also race international events.
  • Every rider needs a licence to race. [3]
  • Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [9]
  • Supplements: no supplement is 100% safe and strict liability applies — food first, with a certified nutritionist. [10]

Bikes, travel and who pays the bills

  • Each discipline needs its own machine — a road bike, a fixed-gear track bike, a mountain bike or a BMX — plus helmet, shoes and spares. Bikes must meet UCI technical rules (including the 6.8 kg minimum) at UCI events. Education Margdarshan does not print shop prices — no governing body publishes them. [3]
