Badminton — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by Badminton World Federation (BWF) · Badminton Association of India (BAI) ·Last checked 16 Oct 2026

The whole Badminton journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Badminton guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · 11 · U13 Grassroots & local entry

Start at a club and your state association; BAI's Mini National (11 years) and U13 All India ranking tournaments build your first BAI ranking. [9]

  2. Stage 2 · U15 · U17 · U19 State to national breakthrough

Sub-Junior (U15, U17) and Junior (U19) Nationals plus ranking events; up to 8th at Sub-Junior/Junior Nationals or top 3 in the state opens SAI Training Centres. KIYG 2026 lists badminton. [9][18][27]

  3. Stage 3 · Senior National camp & elite trials

Senior National and camps at BAI's NCOE, Guwahati; academies such as Gopichand (Hyderabad) and the Centre for Badminton Excellence (Bengaluru); SAI NCOE Hamirpur. [9][11][13][14][18]

  4. Stage 4 · World Tour · LA28 International orbit

    BWF International Challenges → Super 100 → World Tour; best 10 results in 52 weeks make your ranking. LA28 ranking counts 3 May 2027 – 30 Apr 2028. [9][5][8]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [28][17]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

Age checks, clean sport and the LA28 cut-offs

  • If a player's date of birth was registered more than one year after birth, BAI requires medical age tests at a government hospital in SAI's format before age-group events.
  • BAI may run an age-estimation test — physical, dental and X-ray examination — on players who cannot produce the forms. [12]
  • At least 15 doping tests must be done at every Level 1–4 World Tour event (8 at Level 5–6). [3]
  • The athlete must be available for testing in and out of competition and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if no permitted treatment exists. [16]
