Artistic Swimming — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Governed by World Aquatics · Swimming Federation of India (SFI) ·Last checked 17 Oct 2026

The whole Artistic Swimming journey, 0 to 100, in order: the four stages from a local club to the international level, who can start, the detailed route with trials and selection rules, what is open at every age, where to train, who pays, and the jobs and money after. Every step is taken from the same official sources as the main Artistic Swimming guide.

01 Four stages, in order

Zero to podium — the four stages

  1. Stage 1 · 12 and under Grassroots & local entry

Become a strong swimmer at a club; add dance, flexibility and breath control. 12-and-under routines have their own time limits. [6][1]

  2. Stage 2 · Youth · junior State to national breakthrough

Youth and junior events with their own routine time limits. [1]

  3. Stage 3 · 15+ National camp & elite trials

Senior team and duet — technical, free and acrobatic routines; Asian Games 2026. [1][3]

  4. Stage 4 · LA28 International orbit

10 teams, 18 duets: top 3 teams at Budapest 2027, continental bests, then the 2028 World Cup Super Final. [2]

Fuel, from stage 1: food first. Pair cereals with pulses about 3:1 — roti or rice with dal, chana or rajma; vegetarians add milk or curd, others eggs, fish or meat. ICMR-NIN says most athletes get enough protein from food and protein powders are unnecessary; NADA warns that no supplement is risk-free. [11][12]

02 Physical benchmarks & anti-doping

Age rule and anti-doping

  • LA28 artistic swimmers must be born on or before 31 December 2013 — at least 15 by the end of 2028. World Aquatics also runs 12-and-under, youth and junior age groups with shorter routines. [2][1]
  • Under the anti-doping code you must be available for testing and check every medicine against the Prohibited List; apply to NADA for a TUE if you need a banned medicine. [5]

  • Artistic swimming is not named in SAI's NCOE or STC lists; SAI's swimming NCOE is the Dr SPM Swimming Pool Complex, Delhi. Most swimmers start at a swimming club with a coach who teaches routines. [6]
06 Equipment costs & who pays

Pool time, coaching — and who pays

  • Pool time and coaching are the main costs, plus music and travel. Education Margdarshan does not print fees — no governing body publishes them. [1]
