00 The job

What the work really is

A marine engineer runs and repairs a ship's engines, boilers, pumps, electrical plant and machinery. The Indian Maritime University (IMU), a central university, runs Marine Engineering programmes; the Directorate General of Shipping approves institutes, sea time and Certificates of Competency. [1] [2]

A normal working day

  • Keep watch in the engine room and monitor main and auxiliary engines.
  • Carry out planned maintenance and repair breakdowns at sea.
  • Keep fuel, lubrication, safety and pollution-control records.

Pay

Shipping companies set sea salaries; no official pay scale is published, so none is printed.

Main routes

Class 12 → IMU CET → Marine Engineering

Hidden challenges

  • Medical fitness is strict: eyesight, hearing and colour vision under the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, certified by a DG Shipping-approved doctor at admission. [1]
  • Only unmarried candidates are admitted to IMU's marine programmes. [1]
  • Age caps apply from the start of the academic session — 25 for General male candidates on the Class 12 route. [1]

Who should not choose it

  • You get seasick or cannot be away from home for months.
  • You dislike heat, noise and hands-on machinery work.
  • You have a colour-vision defect — it is tested with the Ishihara chart.
01 Your road, stage by stage

What to do at each stage — and the doubts on the way

  1. You are here Class 8 · Class 9

Maths, Physics, Chemistry — and fitness

    • IMU averages your Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics marks — you need 60%. [1]

Doubt What does a marine engineer do?

Runs and maintains a ship's engines and machinery. IMU trains marine engineers, and DG Shipping approves institutes, sea time and Certificates of Competency. [1] [2]

Next: Read the Routes list above.

Doubt Is a marine engineer the same as a Merchant Navy deck officer?

No. Deck officers come from Nautical Science and navigate the ship; marine engineers come from Marine Engineering and run the engine room. [1]

Next: Compare both roads in the cards below.

  2. You are here Class 10

    Pick PCM

    • Choose Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for Class 11–12; keep English strong (50% in Class 10 or 12). [1]

Stream / subjects: Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM).

Doubt Can I take the diploma route after Class 10?

Yes. A 3-year diploma in Marine, Mechanical, Electrical or Electrical & Electronics Engineering with 55% in the final year allows lateral entry into the 2nd year of Marine Engineering. [1]

Next: Keep 55% in your diploma's final year.

Doubt Do I need glasses-free eyesight?

For the Marine Engineering programme: distance vision unaided 6/12 in each eye, or 6/9 in the better eye and 6/18 in the other, plus normal colour vision (Ishihara test). [1]

Next: Get an eye test before Class 12.

  3. You are here Class 11 · Class 12

    60% PCM and IMU CET

    • Class 12 with a PCM average of at least 60% and 50% in English; SC / ST get 5% relaxation in PCM, not in English. [1]

    Exams that open here

    • IMU CET 2026 — 24 May 2026 · result 14 June 2026 [4] [6]

Doubt What IMU CET percentile did I need in 2026?

    UG cut-off percentiles in 2026: General 60, EWS / OBC-NCL 54, SC / ST 45. Seats then go by rank. [5]

Next: Aim well above the cut-off.

Doubt What is the age limit?

    Male: General 25, OBC-NCL 28, SC / ST 30. Female: 27, 30, 32 — counted on the date the academic session begins. [1]

Next: Plan to join soon after Class 12.

    Doubt Can married candidates join?

No. IMU's marine programmes admit only unmarried candidates. [1]

Next: Note this rule before applying.

  4. You are here In college

Marine Engineering at IMU or an affiliated institute

    • At admission you must show a medical fitness certificate from a DG Shipping-approved doctor. [1]

Doubt Should I get a passport?

IMU strongly recommends a passport for marine programme candidates, with the same name as on your Class 10 certificate. [1]

Next: Apply for a passport early.

Doubt Is there any other way into the 2nd year?

Yes: first-year training under DG Shipping's Alternate Training Scheme also counts for 2nd-year lateral entry — except at MERI. [1]

Next: Ask your institute whether it accepts lateral entrants.

Doubt How is the IMU CET score worked out?

IMU CET 2026 ran in two shifts on 24 May 2026, and raw scores were turned into shift-wise percentiles before ranking. [4]

Next: Do not compare raw marks across shifts.

  5. You are here Graduated

    Engineering graduates: PGDME

    • IMU's PGDME takes B.E. / B.Tech Mechanical or Naval Architecture graduates (50% in the final year, 50% English); non-DGS-approved Marine Engineering degrees with 50% also qualify. [1]

Doubt I have a B.Tech Mechanical. Can I still become a marine engineer?

Yes, through IMU's Post Graduate Diploma in Marine Engineering — 50% in the final year and 50% in English. Maximum age (male) General 28, OBC-NCL 31, SC / ST 33. [1]

    Next: Watch IMU's admission notifications.

Doubt Are combined branches like Mechanical & Automation accepted?

Yes, if "Mechanical" comes first in the branch name (showing Mechanical is the core), with 50% in the final year. [1]

Next: Check your degree's exact branch name.

Doubt Who issues the engineer's certificates after sea time?

The Directorate General of Shipping, which also approves maritime institutes and sea-time records. [2]

Next: Keep your sea-time records carefully.

  6. You are here Working / switching career

    Other doors for marine engineers

    • IMU's 2-year M.Tech (Marine Technology) takes B.E. / B.Tech in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture with 55%, or an MEO Class I Certificate of Competency; there is no age restriction. [1]

Doubt Can a marine engineer join the Coast Guard?

Yes, as Assistant Commandant (Technical) — the 2027-batch advertisement lists Marine among accepted engineering degrees, with an age window of 21–25. [3]

Next: See the Coast Guard road.

Doubt Do I need IMU CET for M.Tech (Marine Technology)?

Candidates with a GATE score in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture are exempt from IMU CET, but candidates with IMU CET ranks get preference. [1]

Next: Write IMU CET even if you have GATE.
