How to become a Lawyer — your road, class by class

Class 8 to working life ·Last checked 25 Oct 2026

The one-line route: Class 12 with 45% (40% for SC/ST/PwD) → CLAT → 5-year LL.B. at an NLU (or a 3-year LL.B. after any degree) → enrol with a State Bar Council → pass the AIBE. [1]

Pick your class and the road below starts where you stand.

01 Your road, stage by stage

What to do from your class onward

  1. You are here Class 8 · Class 9 · Class 10

Read every day — CLAT is a reading test

    • CLAT is about 20% English, 25% current affairs, 25% legal reasoning, 20% logical reasoning and 10% quantitative techniques — all from passages. [2]
    • Build the habit now: a newspaper editorial a day, and your board's English and Social Science textbooks (NCERT for CBSE) read properly, not memorised.
  2. You are here Class 11 · Class 12

Any stream works — protect your Class 12 percentage

    • CLAT UG needs Class 12 with at least 45% (40% for SC, ST and PwD). Students writing Class 12 in March/April can apply; there is no upper age limit. [1]
    • CLAT is written in December of your Class 12 year: CLAT 2027 is on 6 December 2026, for seats starting in 2027-28. [3]
  3. You are here In college · Graduated

Already in college? Take the 3-year LL.B.

    • After any bachelor's degree you can do a 3-year LL.B. instead of the 5-year integrated course; both lead to the same right to practise. [4]
    • Final-year LL.B. students can register for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE). AIBE XXI was held on 7 June 2026. [5]

Your school board

Your state board Class 12 marks are used for the 45% rule; every stream is accepted. [1]

CBSE, CISCE and state-board certificates count the same for every national exam on this page. Notes for particular state boards are under State rules below.
