How to become a Financial / Investment Analyst — your road, class by class

Class 8 to working life ·Last checked 25 Oct 2026

The one-line route: Any bachelor's degree (Commerce, Economics, Maths or Engineering are common) → NISM Series XV for SEBI research roles → CFA Program Levels I, II and III + 4,000 hours of work experience → CFA charter. [1] [2]

Pick your class and the road below starts where you stand.

01 Your road, stage by stage

What to do from your class onward

  1. You are here Class 8 · Class 9 · Class 10

Maths, data and reading company news

    • Percentages, ratios, simple statistics and clear English are the daily tools of an analyst. Learn them well from your board's maths and English books.
  2. You are here Class 11 · Class 12

Choose a stream with Maths if you can

    • No exam in this path asks for a particular Class 12 stream. Commerce with Maths, or Science with Maths, makes a B.Com, BBA, Economics or Statistics degree easier.
    • CFA exams are only in English, and you need a valid international travel passport to register and sit — apply for one well before college. [3]
  3. You are here In college · Graduated

    Degree + NISM + CFA

    • To publish research as a SEBI-registered Research Analyst (or work for one), you need a graduate degree and the NISM Series XV Research Analyst certification. [1]
    • CFA Level I is open while you are still studying: the exam window you pick must be 23 months or less before your graduation month. For Level II you must be within 11 months of graduating; for Level III you need the degree (or 4,000 hours of work experience). [3]
    • No degree? You can also enrol with 4,000 hours of work experience and / or higher education built up over at least three sequential years by the time you register for Level I. [3]
    • The charter itself needs all three exams passed, 4,000 hours of relevant work experience over at least 36 months (before, during or after the exams) and CFA Institute membership. [2]

Your school board

Taking Maths in Class 11–12 keeps every finance degree open.

CBSE, CISCE and state-board certificates count the same for every national exam on this page. Notes for particular state boards are under State rules below.
