How to become an Ethical Hacker / Cyber Security Analyst — your road, class by class

Class 8 to working life·15 student doubts answered ·Last checked 25 Oct 2026

The one-line route: Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics → B.Tech in CSE / IT / Cyber Security (JEE Main or your state CET), or B.Sc / BCA → M.Sc / MCA. Government cyber posts such as CERT-In's Scientist-B (Pay Level 10) pick on GATE score. Testing anyone's system without the owner's permission is an offence under the IT Act. [1] [2] [3]

Pick your class and the road below starts where you stand.

00 The job

What the work really is

An ethical hacker finds security holes in websites, apps and networks — with the owner's permission — and helps fix them before criminals use them. India's national cyber security agency is CERT-In, under the Ministry of Electronics and IT. [2] [4]

A normal working day

  • Test apps, networks and cloud systems for weaknesses — only with written permission.
  • Write clear reports: what is wrong, how to reproduce it and how to fix it.
  • Follow new attacks and security advisories, and patch fast.

Main routes

B.Tech CSE / IT / Cyber Security

JEE Main or your state CET after Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics. [1]

B.Sc / BCA → M.Sc / MCA

CERT-In's Scientist-B accepts a 4-year B.E. / B.Tech, a master's in science disciplines or an MCA, in subjects such as Computer Science, IT, Information Security, Cyber Security and Digital Forensics. [2]

Government cyber security (CERT-In)

No fee for any category [2]

Private certification fees are set by private bodies and change often, so we do not print them.

Hidden challenges

  • Hacking without permission is a crime: under IT Act section 66 it can mean up to 3 years in jail, a fine up to ₹5 lakh, or both. [3]
  • CERT-In's policy says reporting a bug does not exempt you from the law — you answer for how you found it. [4]
  • Government posts are few and GATE-based: final merit = 60% GATE score + 40% interview, and you need 50% (40% reserved) in the interview. [2]

Who should not choose it

  • You enjoy breaking things but hate writing reports.
  • You want to get into other people's accounts — that is crime, not a career.
  • You dislike constant learning — attacks change every month.
01 Your road, stage by stage

What to do at each stage — and the doubts on the way

  1. You are here Class 8 · Class 9

    Learn computers the legal way

    • Under the IT Act, getting into a computer, system or network without the owner's permission is penalised (section 43), and doing it dishonestly is a crime (section 66). [3]
    • Practise only on your own devices and on legal practice labs.

Doubt Is ethical hacking legal in India?

Only with the owner's permission. Accessing a computer or network without permission falls under section 43 of the IT Act, and doing it dishonestly or fraudulently is punishable under section 66 with up to 3 years in jail, a fine up to ₹5 lakh, or both. [3]

Next: Never test a site or app you do not own or have written permission for.

    Doubt What is CERT-In?

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, set up in 2004 under the Ministry of Electronics and IT — India's national agency for cyber security under the IT (Amendment) Act 2008. [2]

Next: Follow its advisories to see real attacks and fixes.

Doubt Which school subjects matter most for cyber security?

Mathematics and computers. B.Tech seats through JEE Main need Physics and Mathematics in Class 12, and CERT-In picks on GATE papers in Computer Science, Data Science and AI, or Electronics. [1] [2]

    Next: Keep Maths strong.

  2. You are here Class 10

PCM — or Maths with Computer Science

    • For B.E. / B.Tech, Class 12 must include Physics and Mathematics. [1]

Stream / subjects: PCM, with Computer Science if your school offers it.

    Common mistakes

    • Dropping Maths — it closes B.Tech and most computer degrees.

Doubt Can I become an ethical hacker without Maths in Class 11?

The degree routes here need Mathematics: B.Tech asks for Physics and Mathematics in Class 12, and CERT-In's Scientist-B needs an engineering degree, a science master's or an MCA. [1] [2]

Next: Take Maths in Class 11 if you can.

  3. You are here Class 11 · Class 12

JEE Main and your state CET

    • JEE Main can be taken in your Class 12 year and the two years after it, two sessions a year. [1]

    Money help at this stage

Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships (PM-USP CSSS)

Doubt Is a B.Tech in Cyber Security better than CSE?

For CERT-In's Scientist-B both count — its list of accepted subjects includes Computer Science, IT, Information Security, Cyber Security and Digital Forensics. [2]

Next: Pick the best college and branch you can get; skills matter more.

Doubt Which exam gives B.Tech seats for cyber security?

JEE Main for NITs, IIITs and many colleges, plus your state's engineering entrance for state seats. [1]

    Next: Register for both.

  4. You are here In college

In college: skills, bug reports, GATE

    • You can sit GATE from the 3rd year of a B.Tech, or the 3rd year of a 3-year B.Sc / BCA. [6]
    • Report bugs in products through CERT-In's disclosure policy; it credits the finder in its advisory. [4]

    Exams that open here

    • GATE 2027 — 6–7, 13–14, 20–21 Feb 2027 · result 19 Mar 2027 [7]

    Money help at this stage

    Lower GATE fee

Doubt When can I write GATE?

From the 3rd year of any undergraduate degree, or after completing it. GATE 2027 is on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, with results on 19 March 2027. [6] [7]

Next: Register in August–October of your 3rd year.

Doubt Do companies pay for bugs I report to CERT-In?

CERT-In credits you in its advisory and can introduce you to the vendor if the vendor wants to reward you, but CERT-In itself takes no part in rewards. [4]

Next: Read each company's own bug-bounty terms before testing.

Doubt How do I report a security bug to the government?

Email CERT-In under its Responsible Vulnerability Disclosure and Coordination Policy with the product, exact version, steps to reproduce and proof such as code, screenshots or video. It acknowledges within 72 working hours. [4]

Next: Check the bug exists in the latest supported version and is not already known.

    Doubt Is a 3-year B.Sc enough for CERT-In?

    No. CERT-In's Scientist-B asks for a 4-year B.E. / B.Tech, a master's in science disciplines or an MCA. [2]

Next: Plan an M.Sc or MCA after a B.Sc / BCA.

  5. You are here Graduated

    Government cyber posts or industry

    • CERT-In Scientist-B 2026: age up to 30 (UR / EWS), 33 (OBC-NCL), 35 (SC / ST); applications 14 Jul – 17 Aug 2026; no fee. [2]
    • Final merit = 60% GATE + 40% interview; GATE 2024, 2025 and 2026 scores are weighted equally. [2]

    Doubt What does CERT-In pay a Scientist-B?

    Pay Level 10 of the 7th CPC (₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500), a Group A post. [2]

Next: Keep a valid GATE score — it is the first filter.

Doubt What is the age limit for CERT-In Scientist-B?

30 for UR / EWS, 33 for OBC (non-creamy layer) and 35 for SC / ST, with higher limits for PwBD and service candidates (2026 advert). [2]

Next: Check the next advert's cut-off date.

Doubt Which GATE paper do I need for CERT-In?

CS (Computer Science and IT), DA (Data Science and AI) or EC (Electronics and Communication), matching the discipline you apply for. [2]

Next: Choose your GATE paper by the discipline you want.

Doubt Is there negative marking in GATE?

Yes, for wrong answers in MCQs. GATE has 65 questions (10 General Aptitude + 55 subject) for 100 marks in 3 hours. [8]

Next: Be careful with MCQ guesses.

  6. You are here Working / switching career

    Switching from IT

    • GATE eligibility depends on your degree stage, not your age. [6]

Doubt I already work in IT. Can I move into cyber security?

Yes. GATE eligibility depends on your degree, not your age, but CERT-In's Scientist-B stopped at 30 for UR / EWS in 2026. Private roles have no official age rule. [6] [2]

Next: Choose the route that fits your age.

Your school board

Every board counts for JEE Main and state CETs; NIT seats also need 75% in Class 12 (65% SC / ST / PwD) or your board's top 20 percentile. [1]

CBSE, CISCE and state-board certificates count the same for every national exam on this page. Notes for particular state boards are under State rules below.
