How to become a Chartered Accountant — your road, class by class

Class 8 to working life ·Last checked 25 Oct 2026

The one-line route: Register with ICAI → Foundation (after Class 12) → Intermediate → articleship → Final. Direct Entry skips Foundation for eligible graduates. [1]

Pick your class and the road below starts where you stand.

01 Your road, stage by stage

What to do from your class onward

  1. You are here Class 8 · Class 9

Get comfortable with numbers and English

    • The four Foundation papers are Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics — school maths and clear English are the base for all four. [1]
  2. You are here Class 10

    You can register early

    • You can register for CA Foundation provisionally after Class 10, but you sit the exam only after Class 12. [1]
  3. You are here Class 11 · Class 12

Any stream is allowed — Commerce makes Foundation easier

    • Foundation is open to Commerce, Science and Arts students, with no minimum Class 12 percentage. [1]
    • Commerce with Accountancy gives you a head start on Paper 1; Maths helps in Quantitative Aptitude.
  4. You are here In college · Graduated

    Graduate? Use Direct Entry

    • Graduates can skip Foundation and register straight for Intermediate: Commerce graduates need 55%, others 60%. [1]

Your school board

Accountancy and Economics in Class 11–12 overlap with Foundation Papers 1 and 4.

CBSE, CISCE and state-board certificates count the same for every national exam on this page. Notes for particular state boards are under State rules below.
