How to become a Bank Probationary Officer — your road, class by class

Class 8 to working life ·Last checked 25 Oct 2026

The one-line route: Any graduate aged 20–30 → IBPS PO Preliminary → Main → Personality Test → Interview → provisional allotment to one of 11 public sector banks. [1]

Pick your class and the road below starts where you stand.

01 Your road, stage by stage

What to do from your class onward

  1. You are here Class 8 · Class 9 · Class 10

Arithmetic speed, reasoning and English reading

    • The Preliminary exam is English Language, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability — each with its own 20-minute clock. Fast, accurate school arithmetic is the base. [1]
    • Read an English newspaper daily; the English test is only in English, whatever your school medium. [1]
  2. You are here Class 11 · Class 12

Any stream works — a degree is the gate

    • IBPS asks for a degree in any discipline. It sets no Class 10 or 12 percentage and no stream. [1]
    • Commerce, Economics or Mathematics help with the Banking Awareness and Data Analysis tests later, but are not required.
  3. You are here In college · Graduated

Age, degree result and the yearly cycle

    • Age 20–30 on 1 July 2026, and your degree result must be declared by the cut-off date in the notice (21 July 2026 in this cycle). [1]
    • You must write your graduation percentage (to two decimals) in the form; CGPA must be converted using your university's rule. [1]

Your school board

The tests are in English and Hindi only; the English test is in English alone. [1]

CBSE, CISCE and state-board certificates count the same for every national exam on this page. Notes for particular state boards are under State rules below.
