Mechanical engineer: ABET degree, then an optional PE license

Mechanical engineers typically need a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology. Entry-level jobs need no license; mechanical engineers who sell services to the public must be licensed in every state and D.C.

For: Students who like physics and math and want to design and test machines, engines and devices.

Route 1: Bachelor's in mechanical engineering (or ME technology) Typical

Most employers prefer students from an accredited program; an accredited degree is usually necessary for a PE license.

Licenses, registrations and certifications

Each one is marked: a state or federal license is the law, a registration through an employer comes with the job, and a voluntary certification is one employers may ask for.
