Government jobs

Federal, state and city civil service

Federal agencies hire through job announcements, mostly on USAJOBS. States, counties and cities run separate systems with their own exams and lists.

States, counties & cities

Federal rules stop at federal agencies. Each state, county and city runs its own hiring system, often with its own civil service exams, so check the government you want to work for.

Example: New York State fills jobs by "merit and fitness" under its constitution, through civil service exams and eligible lists, plus non-competitive roles.
