How to become one

The usual route
Most school counselors need a master’s degree in school counseling or a related field and have a state-issued credential. Some states require licensure for career counselors and advisors.

In short
Nearly all states require school counselors to have a master's degree, usually in counseling, plus a state credential called a certification, license or endorsement.
License
State credential (public schools). Public school counselors must hold a state-issued credential; its name and the test differ by state. In Pennsylvania, a Professional Counselor license (LPC) exempts a school counselor candidate from the state tests.
Paying for it
File the FAFSA (opens by October 1) for grants, work-study and federal loans; a Pell Grant pays up to $7,395 a year (2026–27). Average public four-year tuition and fees: $11,950 in-state vs $31,880 out-of-state (2025–26). Residency rules and regional discounts · Save with 2+2 transfer
