Power plant operator: high school, years of plant training; NRC license for nuclear

Operators typically need a high school diploma (employers may prefer a college or vocational degree), may take an aptitude exam, then train on site for several years. Nuclear reactor operators also need a license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

For: Steady, focused people strong in math and science who can work rotating shifts.

Route 1: Hired as a trainee → fully qualified operator Typical

Employers look for a strong background in science and math, especially algebra and trigonometry; the aptitude exam tests reading, mechanical concepts, spatial and math ability.
