Diesel technician: on the job or a diesel program, then certification

Most diesel technicians learn on the job after high school, but employers may prefer a certificate or degree in diesel engine repair from a community college or vocational school. Industry certification may be required, and some need a CDL to test-drive trucks and buses.

For: Hands-on fixers who like engines, electronics and diagnosing problems.

Route 1: Diesel program → technician Employers may prefer

Programs mix classroom and hands-on training: diesel technology, repair techniques and equipment, technical manuals and electronic diagnostic reports.
