Your journey, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1 · Class 11–12 Class 12 subjects and preparation Maths and Statistics matter most.
    • Actuarial science is for students who enjoy probability, statistics and logical thinking.
    • Maths in Class 12 helps; commerce students with Maths are also common.
    • Learn Excel basics and programming exposure such as R or Python.
    • Read about insurance and pensions to understand where actuaries work.

  2. Phase 2 · After Class 12 Entry via ACET The Actuarial Common Entrance Test opens the IAI path.
    • ACET tests Mathematics, Statistics, Logical reasoning and basic English.
    • The test is held multiple times a year; check the IAI calendar.
    • Students with strong marks in Maths and Statistics may claim exemptions.
    • Register with IAI as a student after the test.

  3. Phase 3 · Year 1–3 Core Principles Foundation papers in actuarial maths, statistics, finance and economics.
    • Core Principles include Actuarial Statistics, Statistical Modelling, Financial Mathematics, Models and Business Economics.
    • Exams are held in April and September.
    • You can attempt multiple papers per session, depending on the rules.
    • Pass marks are decided by the IAI, so check the current rules.

  4. Phase 4 · Year 3–6 Core Applications and Specialist papers Apply actuarial skills to life, general insurance and pensions.
    • Core Applications and Specialist Principles cover Life, Health, General Insurance, Pensions and Investment.
    • Specialist Advanced papers cover advanced practice in your chosen field.
    • Projects and communication components are included.
    • Many students work part-time in insurance companies while studying.

  5. Phase 5 · After exams Associateship, fellowship and work experience Become an Associate then a Fellow of the IAI.
    • After completing the required papers and the professionalism course, you become an Associate (AIAI).
    • Further papers and experience lead to Fellowship (FIAI).
    • Actuaries work in life insurance, general insurance, consulting and risk management.
    • Pay annual membership fees and follow professional standards.
