Your journey, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1 · School years Early training and guru-shishya practice Regular training with a teacher matters most.
    • Start formal training in dance, vocal or instrumental music, or theatre under a qualified guru or institution.
    • Take graded exams offered by recognised music and dance bodies where available.
    • Perform in school and local events to build stage confidence.
    • Study theory, history and basic fitness or voice care.

  2. Phase 2 · After Class 12 Degree and institute options BA or Bachelor of Performing Arts, diplomas, or specialised institutes.
    • Universities such as BHU, Delhi University (via CUET-UG and auditions), Banaras, Kathak Kendra and others offer performing arts degrees.
    • National School of Drama (NSD) offers a three-year diploma in dramatic arts, with admission through a written test, workshop and audition.
    • Film and TV institutes (FTII, SRFTI) offer acting and related programmes via their entrance tests.
    • Choose a school based on faculty, performance exposure and alumni.

  3. Phase 3 · Year 1–3 Course structure Technique, theory and performance.
    • Learn technique in your chosen form: Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Hindustani/Carnatic music, Western music or theatre.
    • Study Natyashastra, music theory, history, aesthetics and stage craft.
    • Take practical performances and examinations each year.
    • Participate in productions and festivals.

  4. Phase 4 · During the degree Performance, internships and exposure Build a stage and recording record.
    • Perform at college fests, cultural festivals and in repertory productions.
    • Record audio or video portfolios of your work.
    • Intern with theatre groups, music studios or dance companies.
    • Apply for scholarships such as those from CCRT and the Ministry of Culture.

  5. Phase 5 · After graduation Careers and higher study Performer, teacher, composer or choreographer.
    • Roles: stage performer, music or dance teacher, choreographer, composer, sound artist and arts administrator.
    • Higher study: MA/M.PA, PhD, and UGC NET for teaching in universities.
    • Government: All India Radio, Doordarshan, cultural centres and school teaching (with B.Ed).
    • Freelance and online teaching channels are growing.
