Your journey, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1 · Class 10–12 Class 10–12: start sketching and observing Any stream; practise drawing and look closely at design around you.
    • Graphic design is open to students from any stream.
    • Collect examples of good posters, logos and packaging and note why they work.
    • Practise drawing and composition; it helps design thinking.
    • Learn basic computer skills and free tools like Canva.

  2. Phase 2 · After Class 12 Degree options and entrance B.Des, BFA or short professional courses.
    • B.Des programmes admit through UCEED (IIT design programmes), NID DAT, NIFT and institute entrance tests.
    • BFA (Applied Art) is available at art colleges via their entrance exams.
    • Diplomas and certificates provide a faster route into the industry.
    • Check the faculty’s portfolio and student work before choosing.

  3. Phase 3 · Months 1–6 Design fundamentals Principles and typography.
    • Learn layout, hierarchy, colour theory, typography and grid systems.
    • Study branding, logo design and visual identity.

    • Practise with daily design challenges.

  4. Phase 4 · Months 6–12 Software and specialisation Master the tools of the trade.
    • Learn Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Figma.
    • Explore specialisations such as branding, packaging, motion graphics or UI design.
    • Build brand identity, poster, packaging and social media design projects.
    • Learn how to present and defend design decisions.

  5. Phase 5 · Year 1–2 of practice Portfolio and job entry Show a coherent set of projects.
    • Build a portfolio with 6–10 strong projects and publish on Behance or a personal site.

    • Apply for roles such as graphic designer, visual designer and brand designer.
    • Freelance work and competitions add experience.
