BSc Genetics — Step-by-Step Roadmap

Your journey, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1 · Class 11–12 Class 11–12 subjects Science with Biology and Chemistry; Maths is helpful for statistics.
    • Most universities need Class 12 PCB with a minimum percentage.
    • Strengthen Biology, Chemistry and basic statistics.
    • Read about genomics, personalised medicine and ethics.
    • Look for universities with molecular biology labs.
    Subjects
    PCB (Biology + Chemistry)
  2. Phase 2 · After Class 12 Entrance exams and admission CUET-UG for many universities, merit or entrance for others.
    • Take CUET-UG with the science domain subjects.
    • Apply through the university counselling portal.
    • Private universities may run their own tests.
    • Prefer colleges with active research labs.
    Route
    CUET-UG / merit
  3. Phase 3 · Year 1 Year 1: foundation papers Core science papers and lab skills.
    • Core papers: Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Basic Genetics and Chemistry.
    • Under NEP you also take language, environment and skill-enhancement courses.
    • Learn to maintain a lab notebook, follow safety rules and write practical reports.
    • Start reading beyond the syllabus and attend department seminars.

Core + skill courses + labs
  4. Phase 4 · Year 2–3 Year 2–3: advanced and applied papers Deeper papers, electives and a project.
    • Year 2: Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Population and Evolutionary Genetics, and Biostatistics.
    • Year 3: Genetic Engineering, Human Genetics, Bioinformatics, Genomics and Proteomics, and a research project.
    • Complete a project or dissertation under a faculty guide.
    • Many universities offer a fourth Honours year with research.
    Project
    Final-year dissertation
  5. Phase 5 · During the degree Lab skills, internships and training Practical skills decide employability.
    • Learn: PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA extraction, microscopy, bioinformatics tools and basic Python or R.
    • Do summer internships or short research projects in labs, companies and government institutions.
    • Take certificate courses on SWAYAM, NPTEL or industry bodies.
    • Keep a record of your projects, certificates and skills.
    Resources
    Internships, SWAYAM, NPTEL
  6. Phase 6 · After graduation After BSc: MSc, exams and careers Master’s degree, NET/JRF, government jobs or industry.
    • Further study and careers: MSc Genetics/Biotechnology, research assistant roles, genetic counselling programmes, diagnostics and biotech companies.
    • Exams: CUET-PG, CSIR-UGC NET, GAT-B/BET, ICMR JRF and university PhD entrances.
    • Research route: MSc, then CSIR-UGC NET (JRF) or GATE and a PhD.
    • Government exams such as SSC and state PSCs are open to science graduates.
