BSc Environmental Science — Step-by-Step Roadmap
Your journey, phase by phase
-
Phase 1 · Class 11–12 Class 11–12 subjects Science with Biology or Maths alongside Physics and Chemistry.
- Most universities accept Class 12 Science (PCB or PCM); some accept any stream with Biology or Geography.
- Build basics in Biology, Chemistry and Geography.
- Observe local environmental problems such as waste, water and air pollution.
- Read about climate change, biodiversity and environmental law.
- Subjects
- PCB or PCM
-
Phase 2 · After Class 12 Entrance exams and admission CUET-UG for central universities, merit or entrance for others.
- Take CUET-UG with the required science domain subjects.
- Apply through university counselling portals.
- State and private universities admit through merit lists or tests.
- Prefer colleges with field stations, labs and EIA project exposure.
- Route
- CUET-UG / merit
-
Phase 3 · Year 1 Year 1: foundation papers Core science papers and lab skills.
- Core papers: Ecology and Ecosystems, Environmental Chemistry, Geology and Soil Science, and Environmental Studies.
- Under NEP you also take language, environment and skill-enhancement courses.
- Learn to maintain a lab notebook, follow safety rules and write practical reports.
- Start reading beyond the syllabus and attend department seminars.
- Structure
- Core + skill courses + labs
-
Phase 4 · Year 2–3 Year 2–3: advanced and applied papers Deeper papers, electives and a project.
- Year 2: Environmental Microbiology, Pollution (Air, Water and Soil), Climate Science, and Statistics for Environmental Data.
- Year 3: Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Law and Policy, Waste Management, GIS and Remote Sensing, and a field-based dissertation.
- Complete a project or dissertation under a faculty guide.
- Many universities offer a fourth Honours year with research.
- Project
- Final-year dissertation
-
Phase 5 · During the degree Lab skills, internships and training Practical skills decide employability.
- Learn: water, air and soil testing, ecological surveys, GIS (QGIS/ArcGIS), data analysis and EIA report writing.
- Do summer internships or short research projects in labs, companies and government institutions.
- Take certificate courses on SWAYAM, NPTEL or industry bodies.
- Keep a record of your projects, certificates and skills.
- Resources
- Internships, SWAYAM, NPTEL
-
Phase 6 · After graduation After BSc: MSc, exams and careers Master’s degree, NET/JRF, government jobs or industry.
- Further study and careers: MSc Environmental Science, EIA and ESG consulting, waste management, pollution control boards, forestry, NGO and CSR roles.
- Exams: CUET-PG, CSIR-UGC NET, state pollution control board recruitment, UPSC (Indian Forest Service) and state PSCs.
- Research route: MSc, then CSIR-UGC NET (JRF) or GATE and a PhD.
