Your journey, phase by phase

  1. Phase 1 · Class 11–12 Class 11–12 and preparation Any stream; interest in community work matters.
    • BSW is open to Class 12 pass students from any stream, with minimum marks as per the college.
    • Volunteer with local NGOs, school social service programmes or community drives.
    • Read about social issues, welfare schemes and development.
    • Build empathy, listening and communication skills.

  2. Phase 2 · After Class 12 Admission process CUET-UG or merit and interviews.
    • Central universities use CUET-UG; many colleges admit by merit.
    • Some institutes such as TISS conduct their own tests for social science programmes.
    • Rank colleges by fieldwork quality and NGO tie-ups.
    • Complete verification and fee payment.

  3. Phase 3 · Year 1–3 Course structure Social work methods, theory and social sciences.
    • Year 1: Introduction to Social Work, Sociology, Psychology and Indian Social Problems.
    • Year 2: Casework, Group Work, Community Organisation and Social Research.
    • Year 3: Social Welfare Administration, Human Rights, Social Policy and Specialisations.
    • Each year includes theory and supervised fieldwork.

  4. Phase 4 · Every year Fieldwork and internships Supervised placements in NGOs, hospitals, schools and communities.
    • Complete concurrent fieldwork (usually a few days a week) and block placements.
    • Write fieldwork reports and attend supervision sessions.
    • Gain exposure to child welfare, health, women’s issues and community development.
    • Fieldwork is the core of professional training.

  5. Phase 5 · After graduation After BSW MSW, jobs in NGOs and CSR, or government exams.
    • Higher study: MSW (via TISS-NET, CUET-PG or university tests) in specialisations such as Medical and Psychiatric Social Work, Community Development or Human Resources.
    • Jobs: programme officer, social worker, counsellor, CSR executive and community coordinator.
    • Government: welfare departments, child protection services and health programmes.
    • Research and teaching: UGC NET and PhD.
