Phase 1 · Class 11–12 Class 11–12 and early practice Any stream is accepted; regular drawing practice matters most.
- BFA colleges ask for Class 12 pass in any stream, with minimum marks as per the college.
- Practise sketching, still life, observation and colour work daily.
- Visit museums, galleries and art fairs, and study art history basics.

Phase 2 · After Class 12 Entrance tests and portfolio College entrance, drawing test and interview.
- Colleges such as Jamia Millia Islamia, BHU, MS University Baroda, Jadavpur University and others run their own exams; some central universities use CUET-UG.
- Tests usually include drawing from observation, memory or composition, and a general-aptitude paper.
- Prepare a portfolio and be ready for an interview about your work.
- Apply to several colleges, because tests are held separately.

Phase 3 · Year 1 Foundation year Drawing, design and art history.
- Learn drawing, colour theory, design fundamentals and materials.
- Take art history and aesthetics courses.
- Try different media: pencil, charcoal, watercolour, oil, clay and digital.

Phase 5 · After BFA Careers and higher study Artist, illustrator, designer, art teacher or curator.
- Careers: professional artist, illustrator, art director, graphic designer, art teacher, restorer and gallery curator.
- Higher study: MFA, MA Art History, museum studies or design programmes.
- Apply to scholarships such as those from the Ministry of Culture.
- Build a website and join galleries and online platforms to sell work.
