B.Ed — Becoming a School Teacher in India — Step-by-Step Roadmap
Your journey, phase by phase

Phase 1 · Class 12 or graduation Choose your route Two-year B.Ed after a bachelor’s degree, or the four-year integrated ITEP after Class 12.
- B.Ed (2 years): open to graduates, usually with at least 50% marks, in subjects that match school teaching.
- ITEP (4 years): integrated teacher education programme after Class 12, admission through the National Common Entrance Test (NCET) conducted by NTA.
- Check that the college is recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
- Pick teaching subjects (e.g., Maths, Science, Social Science, English) according to your degree.

Phase 2 · After graduation or Class 12 Entrance exams and admission State B.Ed CETs, university entrances and NCET.
- Take your state’s B.Ed entrance (e.g., state CETs) or the university’s own test.
- Apply for NCET for ITEP seats in participating institutions.
- Counselling allots colleges according to rank.
- Submit your degree certificates and complete admission.

Phase 3 · Year 1–2 Course structure Foundations of education, pedagogy and school subjects.
- Learn Educational Psychology, Philosophy and Sociology of Education, Curriculum Studies and Assessment.
- Study pedagogy of two school subjects and use ICT in teaching.
- Take courses on inclusive education, gender and school management.
- Learn lesson planning, classroom management and communication.

Phase 4 · During the course School internship and teaching practice Several weeks of teaching in real schools under mentor teachers.
- Complete the school internship period required by NCTE guidelines.
- Observe lessons, plan units, teach classes and get feedback from mentors.
- Prepare a portfolio with lesson plans, reflections and teaching aids.

Phase 5 · After B.Ed Teacher eligibility tests and jobs CTET and state TETs are needed for most government school jobs.
- CTET (conducted by CBSE) has Paper I for classes 1–5 and Paper II for classes 6–8; clearing it gives eligibility for central schools like KVS and NVS and many private schools.
- State TETs apply to government schools in each state.
- Recruitment: KVS, NVS, DSSSB, state teacher recruitment and private schools.
- Further study: M.Ed, UGC NET and PhD for higher education.
